Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Eppadi - Review
Well friends, after light years, i'm back with a movie review. An year at Ahmedabad and apathetic attitude of Tamil Directors(when a critically acclaimed director like Suseendaran doles out a movie like Rajapattai, i dunno what else to say) haven't helped much in my 'quest' for decent Tamil films. So it has taken some time before i was fortunate enough to watch a Tamil film blogging about.
After a lot of stereotypical movies about love and most of them claiming to be 'different' love story, we have a move which is a totally normal love story. What makes it different is the fact that it is not 'normal' as in cinematic love stories. It is 'normal' like those love stories most of us would have been part of. Directed by debutante Balaji Mohan (the guy is just 24, you've gotta give it to him) based on his own short film, this gem of a movie gets most of the things right.
Lets start with the casting. Siddharth is perfect in the role of Arun, a confused lover who has no clue why his love broke up. The director has used him effectively and and the narration where the lead character 'breaks the fourth wall'(directly speaks to the audience) is something novel to Tamil cinema. The reaction Siddhu gives when his father asks him to accept his Facebook friend request is awesome.
Amala Paul is charming, cute and brings out all the qualities that makes gen-x girls easily likable yet so difficult to handle. All the other cast members have done a decent job, and the guy in the role of Siva is a scream to watch.
The main strength of the movie is the dialogues. Most of them perfectly reflect the mentality of today's youth when it comes to love and relationships. For eg 'Why couldn't girls understand that guys can spend half an hour without thinking about anything?' 'I behaved like a guy and she behaved like a girl, i think thats the reason for our break-up.'etc. They are really witty and hilarious. Kudos to the team.
Thaman's music is also a high point as the songs totally are in line with the movie. Especially 'Azhaippaya', the music and lyrics are mesmerizing. Camera and Costumes make every frame of the movie look youthful and pretty.
Go for the ride. This movie will make us smile, have fun and laugh our guts out. But we will be laughing at ourselves, not at the movie.
